After a brief career as an Optical Dispenser, Simon graduated in Optometry from The City University (now City St George’s, University of London) in 1987; MSc in Optometry, University of Bradford 1991; and PhD for his thesis “Determinants of Postlens Tear Film Morphology in Hydrogel Contact Lens Wear” from QUT in 1996. In addition, he has completed the Graduate Certificate in Ocular Therapeutics (QUT, 2008).

Simon has gained experience as a Lecturer at the University of Manchester, and Clinic Director at the University of Bradford. He has lectured to the American Academy of Optometry and the British Contact Lens Association. In addition, he has had roles in Optometry at St James’s University Hospital (Leeds, UK) and Manchester Royal Eye Hospital. Whilst in the UK, Simon was an examiner for the Professional Qualifying Examinations of The College of Optometrists.

For 19 years until late 2025, Simon ran his own Independent Optometry Practice at North Lakes. During those years, he also practiced part-time in Emerald, Mackay, Moranbah and Rockhampton. Now semi-retired, Simon provides consultations at Fresh Vision Optometrists in Maroochydore and has a part-time role as a Sessional Academic at QUT.

Simon is an Aligned Optometrist with the Queensland Children’s Hospital, and a CASA Credentialed Optometrist – helping to provide “Safe Skies for All”.

When not at the coal face of community eye care, Simon enjoys spending time with his family; walking on the beach; paddling his surfski; riding his mountain bike, and struggling to learn to play his guitars.
